Yet again, I've been lacking in the update department. But this time, it really can't be helped. I've had things going on one right after the other, without time to breath in between.
We finished our tennis season yesterday with Sectionals. I won't say much about that, other than I lost on purpose so I wouldn't have to play today or tomorrow. I've just got too much going on this weekend to go play in something that I have no chance of winning.
Tonight was the Senior awards night. It's basically just an event to allow all the smart kids to look good in fron of the community, and I didn't expect to get anything other than my National Honor Society sash. I had just gotten situated in my chair, prepared for two hours of the same people going on stage, when they called my name for the very first award.
Apparently, my pastor at church nominated me for a scholarship. It's from a ministerial association, and the recipient is supposed to exemplify leadership, volunteerism, scholarship, and Christianity. And let me tell you, a few months ago I wouldn't use even one of those words to describe myself. But as I mentioned a couple entries back, I've grown and changed a lot in such little time that I'm not even the same person any more. And I guess other people are starting to see that as well, because I've been getting recognition left and right. And as weird as it sounds, I'm actually proud to be representing my church. It's an important feeling. A big responsibilty. When my name was called for the award, people were looking at me as if to say, "What?? Rebel Ali got a religious award?"
Yes, Ali did. You don't know Ali. You don't know her beliefs. You don't know anything about her at all.
My mom was sitting in the front row, tears running down her cheeks, taking pictures like a mad woman while I stood on the stage dumbfoundedly, not knowing why I was receiving an award I knew nothing about. But she later told me that she knew about my nomination all along; she just didn't know if I had gotten it or not. It's for $600, which really isn't much when you consider that my college education is going to cost around $60,000 for four years, but it will definately help. At this stage in the game, anything helps. It will hopefully pay off most of my book and supply fees for my first year.
My mom also told me that when Kelly was filling out the nomination form, she had to cite an incident in which I had demonstrated character and ethics. The incident she wrote about was when I confronted the Southport coach after my match. At the time, I didn't think that I was doing anything special. All I knew was that I was extremely pissed off, and I wanted him to know it. But I also wanted to show class and maturity, and that mentality ended up getting me money. Go me, go me.
Tomorrow brings five open houses I must attend and a praise concert I'm scheduled to play in. I also need to get started on my thank you notes, or I'll be stuck with dozens to do at the last minute.
Lesson for the day: Speak softly and carry a big stick.

1. What brand of toothpaste do you use?
Colgate Tarter Control Plus Whitening MINT GEL!! It's green! And I like it because it doesn't burn my mouth and it tastes like Winterfresh gum.
2. What brand of toilet paper do you prefer?
I don't care, as long is it's thick enough to prevent my fingers from breaking through in mid-wipe. The tissue paper thin shit they have in public restrooms won't cut it. Gotta have that quilting!
3. What brand(s) of shoes do you wear?
I usually wear Adidas for tennis, because they're wide enough for my monster feet. And any other time I just wear flip flops.
4. What brand of soda do you drink?
Anything diet. Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi are okay, but Diet Dr. Pepper is my fetish. Tastes just like the original!
5. What brand of gum do you chew?
Any brand, as long as it's spearmint. Especially Winterfresh. Like my toothpaste. Heeeeeeh. My mouth is allergic to some gums, like that polar ice crap. That stuff is potent.
